Based on the agreement signed between Airbnb and the Municipality of Rome, starting from 1 July, the online booking platform is going to collect the stay contribution from users who book overnight stays on the portal, to pay it directly into the cashiers of Roma Capitale.
The agreement envisages a quarterly payment, with the commitment to provide Roma Capitale with periodic documentation on the number of bookings and overnight stays, and to communicate its role in collecting the tax to the owners of the properties used for tourist accommodation. The tax collection will take place upon confirmation of the online booking; in case of subsequent cancellation, the amounts paid in excess will be deducted from subsequent payments made by the company.
As underlined by the Mayor Virginia Raggi, the agreement is an important step to guarantee both a level playing field for all sector operators and greater resources and revenues to be reinvested for the city. Furthermore, in order to relaunch tourism economy, Airbnb is studying a series of actions for the rediscovery of the lesser known places in Rome, encouraging domestic and sustainable tourism, aimed at a more specifically national target.
