With the fourth edition of the Festa della Resistenza, Roma Capitale marks the 81st Anniversary of the Liberation and the 80th anniversary of the Constituent Assembly: four days of culture and participation, from 23 to 26 April, featuring over 100 events at the Mattatoio in Testaccio and at other venues across the city.
Culture, debate, collective participation, performance and music: memory returns to inhabit the places where freedom was won, confirming the itinerant nature of an event that seeks out history in the very stones of the city.
This exceptionally rich programme of around 100 events ‒ almost entirely free of charge ‒ includes lectures, book presentations, theatre, screenings, music, exhibitions and guided routes, and is hosted primarily at the newly refurbished Mattatoio in Testaccio, chosen this year as the festival’s main venue.
The Resistance began not far away, at Porta San Paolo: between 9 and 10 September 1943, the first determined and organised response to the Nazi occupation erupted, immediately following the announcement of the armistice on 8 September. While the leadership of the State vanished, soldiers and civilians fought side by side to block the advance of German paratroopers. This sacrifice cost the lives of four hundred people ‒ including 43 women ‒ and marked the dawn of the National Liberation Movement.
This edition symbolically links the celebrations of the 81st Anniversary of the Liberation with the enduring milestone of the 80th anniversary of the Constituent Assembly, tracing the threads that connect the partisan struggle to the drafting of our Constitution, while paying special tribute to the 21 “Mothers of the Constitution” who transformed civic commitment into the foundations of democracy. This recognition becomes living memory within the spaces of the Mattatoio, which for the occasion turns into a true “Citadel of the Resistance”: an open public square for participation and encounter, where you can spend the day among the many scheduled events.
During the festival, several areas will be named after key figures of the Resistance and the birth of the Republic, including Tina Anselmi, Adele Bei, Nilde Iotti, Lina Merlin and Teresa Noce, as well as Piero Calamandrei and Sandro Pertini.
For the 81st Anniversary of the Liberation, Roma Capitale has launched a major communication campaign to rekindle memory and bring the faces of this year’s five leading figures across the city, using the visual language of pop art and comics to portray these extraordinary women in their youth, capturing the energy and contemporary relevance of their political and civic action. This visual and emotional tribute ‒ through a simple, direct message of thanks printed on each image ‒ bridges the gap with the present and shows how the values of our Constitution remain more alive than ever: deeply rooted and indispensable.
Numerous guests will take part in the event, across the various stages of the Mattatoio, including Marianna Aprile, Viola Ardone, Corrado Augias, Sonia Bergamasco, Gianrico Carofiglio, Luciana Castellina, Filippo Ceccarelli, Alfonso Celotto, Davide Conti, Lella Costa, Annalisa Cuzzocrea, Marco Damilano, Giancarlo De Cataldo, Concita De Gregorio, Paolo Di Paolo, Emiliano Fittipaldi, Anna Foglietta, Giordano Gasperini, Umberto Gentiloni, Raffaele Giuliani, Lucia Goracci, Isabella Insolvibile, Djarah Kan, Gad Lerner, Mimmo Lucano, Francesca Mannocchi, Dacia Maraini, Valentina Petrini, Ottavia Piccolo, Antonella Polimeni, Michela Ponzani, Alessandro Portelli, Daniela Preziosi, Vanessa Roghi, Roberto Saviano, Igiaba Scego, Marino Sinibaldi, Ermanno Taviani, Benedetta Tobagi, Fabio Tonacci, and many others.
