A truly spectacular perspective! The walkway through the heart of the Trevi Fountain, one of the most iconic monuments in Rome and the world, was inaugurated this morning.
The new walkway offers an unprecedented viewpoint of the splendid 18th-century fountain that will allow Romans and tourists alike to see Nicola Salvi's masterpiece from an unusual perspective: a unique view to enjoy while maintenance work continues on the extremely important monument.
Following this, restoration work will also begin on the small Fontana degli Innamorati, the rectangular basin that, located on the outer right side of the Trevi Fountain, invites couples to drink to remain in love and faithful forever, as legend has it.
Work is scheduled to be completed next December, in time for the start of Pope Francis' Jubilee.
The walkway is equipped with a people-counting mat to test the quota – and for better enjoyment of the fountain – allowing 130 people to enter at a time.
The work being carried out is part of the extraordinary maintenance that was necessary to preserve the fountain from deterioration. In particular, work is planned to remove the biological patina that has accumulated over the years, restore lost or loose grouting caused by infiltrating vegetation, and remove limestone deposits.
The walkway will be open on Mondays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., every other day from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (last access at 8.30 p.m.).
