On the occasion of the opening of the Jubilee celebrations and thirty years after the death of Richard Krautheimer, eminent art historian and architectural historian, the Colosseum Archaeological Park presents a series of conferences in the Curia Iulia taken from the volume "Three Christian Capitals. Topography and Politics” (1983), a milestone in the studies of Christian and late ancient archeology and topography.
The series of conferences opens on October 31st at 4.30 pm with a speech by Monsignor Andrea Lonardo, director of the Service for Culture and University of the Diocese of Rome, who offers a broad introduction on the figure of Constantine from the point of view of innovations in the religious sphere, in topography and politics as well as the relationship between temporal and religious power.
Each appointment delves into the transformation of one of the three capitals of the Empire - Rome, Constantinople and Milan - in the aftermath of the Edict of Milan in 313, the result of Constantine's innovations which led to profound and subsequent urban and topographical transformations. The conferences also represent an opportunity, thirty years later, to bring new archaeological discoveries and acquisitions to the attention of the general public.
