The result of a collaboration with the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the monographic exhibition hosted by the MAXXI museum and curated by Gloria Moure brings to light the artistic research and creative approach of Giovanni Anselmo, who was born in Borgofranco d’Ivrea in 1934 and recently died. It is the last exhibition designed by the artist and is therefore an important part of his artistic legacy, a journey through his career from the 1960s to the present day.
As one of the founders and main exponents of Arte Povera, Anselmo has actively and with great sensitivity investigated the energies, forces and dynamics that govern the universe. The works in the exhibition give back to the public the portrait of an artist who was able, however, to break free from any label and, ranging between installation, painting and photography, created a unique and personal language focused on physicality and the concepts of space and time.
In addition to loans from major museums, the thirty works on display come from the artist’s own collection and from private collections throughout Europe. The scenic Gallery 5 that houses them is the appropriate place to fully unleash the powerful relationship between Anselmo’s work and the architectural space in which it is exhibited.
