Summermela - XII edition

The 12th edition of SummerMela, the festival dedicated to the Indian cultures and traditions on the International Yoga Day, opens on 21 June with a special event promoted by the FAD Foundation in collaboration with the Indian Embassy in Italy. The opening event of the festival takes place inside one of the most representative monuments of Rome: Castel Sant’Angelo.

The program of this first evening includes an open yoga session led by Riccardo Serventi Longhi, teacher of the Italian Yoga Federation and by representatives of various yoga associations who will guide the participants through the "common yoga protocol", the practice guidelines spread by New Delhi. The evening is therefore a special opportunity to practice this discipline in a fascinating atmosphere steeped in history, promoting well-being and harmony among the participants. Each participant can freely take part in the session by bringing their own mat from home.

SummerMela is part of another International Festival, that of music, presenting at 8.00 pm in the same setting of Castel Sant'Angelo a concert of Dhrupad classical music, the oldest genre of classical music in Northern India, considered the foundation of Hindustani vocal and instrumental music. In fact, Dhrupad has its origins in the Vedic chants of the Sama Veda and shares a close link with the tradition of nada yoga (yoga of sound). This genre has evolved over the centuries as a musical genre, assimilating into its repertoire the devotional songs of the temples and the compositions of the court environments of the period of Mughal domination. The recital features Sumeet Anand Pandey on vocals, Parminder Singh - al Pakhawaj and Ritika Pandey on tanpura.
The International Yoga Day, established by the ONU in 2014, is celebrated on June 21, the day of the summer solstice, in over 170 countries around the world. This event represents an important moment of celebrations in Italy, which combines culture, spirituality and well-being in a single evening.
