This year the 19th edition of the Rome Film Festival, scheduled from 16 to 27 October, is dedicated to Marcello Mastroianni, one of the most important and award-winning Italian actors, three times nominated for an Oscar, winner of two Golden Globes, awarded for his performances in all the main international festivals, protagonist of the official image of this edition.
To celebrate the career of Marcello Mastroianni, the Rome Film Festival has planned a long series of initiatives and events. Among these, a large retrospective of films, some in restored versions, in which the great actor collaborated with directors such as Federico Fellini, Vittorio De Sica, Ettore Scola, Pietro Germi; documentaries on his life and works; exhibitions that are set up between the Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone and the Casa del Cinema, and a meeting with the actress Chiara Mastroianni – daughter of the actor and Catherine Deneuve – to whom the Festival dedicates a special tribute.
In addition to the International Competition entitled Progressive Cinema - Visioni per il mondo di domani, the Fest's programme is made up of other non-competitive sections such as Grand Public, with films for the general public, Best of 2024, with some of the season's best titles from other international festivals, and Storia del Cinema with tributes and in-depth studies of the work of leading figures in Italian and international cinema. Flanking the programme of films are two sections devoted to Meetings with the Public: Paso Doble, which features a dialogue between two authors, and Absolute Beginners, in which an established author recounts the story of his debut in cinema.
The Auditorium Parco della Musica Ennio Morricone, a structure designed by Renzo Piano, is as always the fulcrum of the event with one of the largest red carpets in the world. Once again this year, the Cinema Festival will involve the entire city: from the MAXXI to the Teatro Olimpico, from the Casa del Cinema to Via Veneto to the Palladium Theatre and the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, as well as the Leonardo da Vinci Airport with two screening evenings hosted at Terminal 5.
