The Taste of Rome
The trattoria was originally in Via Fosse di Castello, overshadowed by the Passetto di Borgo, an elevated passage that connects the Vatican to Castel Sant'Angelo. It opened in 1927, and was taken over by Romolo Mattei in 1932, which is when it got its historic name.
Romolo’s trattoria was popular throughout the Borgo Pio district, attracting all kinds of customers, and was a typical Roman tavern with an authentic and genuine atmosphere, bringing together different classes at the same tables. Because, as an old Roman proverb says, “at the table everyone is the same.”
In the 1960s, his wife Maria took over the restaurant, together with their nephew Vittorio Perilli, who succeeded in making the restaurant a famous and extremely popular meeting place. When the reins were handed over to Vittorio definitively in the 1980s, the traditional Roman cuisine and the family’s typical warm welcome, made the Trattoria Da Romolo stand out among the multitude of tourist restaurants in the area.
In 2002, the baton passed to the Perilli family heirs, Luigi and Mario, who have run the business with determination and competence ever since. Forced to leave their historic premises in Via Fosse di Castello, they found a new location for their restaurant, very close to the original one, in Vicolo del Campanile.
Therefore, since 2015, the trattoria has had a new life in a suggestive location, surrounded by ancient walls. Customers can enjoy the unique experience of savoring Rome from their table, thanks to the large glass wall overlooking remnants of the past, and, in summer, the wonderful terrace overlooking the Passetto, which is lit up in the evening. A pleasing blend of tradition and innovation is captured both in the decor and the dishes, which, respecting their Roman roots, still include typical delicacies, alongside delicious new proposals, influenced by customer needs, or the chef’s imagination. The dishes, which are immediately shared on social media, entice the curiosity and tastebuds of regulars and new customers alike.
Their ambitious project is to become a food and wine hub for Rome and its surrounding countryside, making Lazio’s typical products the absolute stars of their menu. This starts with the vineyards which produce local wines, so as to promote and pay homage to the culinary culture that has watched them grow.
