Chiesa di Santa Maria Madre della Misericordia

The Church of Santa Maria Madre della Misericordia, was built in 1937, designed by architect Tullio Rossi (Rome 1903 - Florence 1995), who was also responsible for the construction of new churches. This was done after the signing of the Concordat, in the urban expansion areas of the capital, accepting the economic limitations of the time, without sacrificing the recognisability of the new buildings, and building 38 churches between 1933 and 1956. Rossi was called to serve as the official architect of the Pontifical Opera, and his collaboration with the Church of Rome was appreciated by two Popes: Pope Ratti, Pius XI and Pope Pacelli, Pius XII.
It is no coincidence that the façade of the church at the Gordiani, recalls a hut shape, with a tiled roof, and has a forepart with the function of a prothyrum, a short corridor for access into the sacred place. Internally, it has an elongated rectangular floor plan, a wooden truss ceiling and is bare of artwork. In recent years, five large windows have been replaced with stained glass windows with religious images.
The church has been a parish seat since 15 July 1952, decided by decree of the Cardinal Vicar Clemente Micara, and entrusted first to the priests of the Congregation of the Poor Servants of Divine Providence of Verona, founded by Don Giovanni Calabria (Verona 1873 - Verona 1954), proclaimed a saint in 1999, then to the clergy of the Diocese of Rome.
