Sant'Ivo dei Bretoni

The present church was built near or over an ancient medieval church, Sant'Andrea de Mortarariis, the oldest evidence of which is a bull of Pope Innocent II (first half of the 12th century). The name is said to derive from the confraternity of marble workers in Rome: in fact, in later documents the church is referred to as de marmorariis.
Pope Nicholas V, in the 15th century, granted the church to the Bretons as their national church, confirmed by Pope Calixtus III with the bull Rationi congruit of 20 April 1455. The church had a hospice for French pilgrims attached to it. This old church was most probably destroyed in the 16th century and rebuilt under the title of St Ivo: only the bell tower remained of the medieval church, but it too collapsed in 1875. This new church, which was the parish seat until 1824, left in a state of neglect and continuously flooded by the Tiber floods, was demolished in 1875.

In place of the old church, the French government rebuilt a new church dedicated to St Ivo in a place close to the previous one: the façade of the new church, in fact, the work of Luca Carimini in 1888, is located on the opposite side of the demolished one.

During the construction of the new church, remains and ancient vestiges were found, which are now preserved in the building attached to the church of St. Louis of the French.
