The title of St. Athanasius is well suited to a Roman parish: the saint, in fact, invited to Rome by Pope Julius I to discuss the problems that had arisen with the Eusebians (Roman Council of 340), during his stay acquainted the Roman community with Egyptian monasticism, the biography of St. Anthony Abbot, the monastic rule of St. Pachomius and the discipline of virgins and widows. Anthony the Abbot, the monastic rule of St Pachomius and the monastic discipline of virgins and widows, so that the foundation of monasticism in Rome and the beginning of what is commonly referred to as Italic monasticism can be seen in his work. (Cf. St Jerome ep. 127 in P.L. 22, 1089-90). The parish was established on 11 March 1961 by decree of Cardinal Vicar Clemente Micara Neminem sane and entrusted to the diocesan clergy of Rome.
The territory, deduced from that of S. Lorenzo fuori le Mura, S. Giuseppe Artigiano and S. Michele Arcangelo in Pietralata, by decree of the Cardinal Vicar Angelo Dell'Acqua of 20 November 1970 was determined within the following new boundaries: From Via Tiburtina we take Via di Casale Galvani (even numbers) until we reach Via Cave di Pietralata - Via Cave di Pietralata and then the new Via di P. R. which will be its continuation until it intersects Via dei Monti Tiburtini - Via dei Monti Tiburtini as far as Via Giulio Verne (which remains in the parish of S. Maria della Visitazione pending a final redevelopment of the area) - follow the line of the Acqua Vergine Aqueduct as far as Via Vertumno No.50 (belonging to S. Michele Arcangelo, now S. Atanasio) - continue along Via Faunia (even numbers) to Via A. Benedetti - Via A. Benedetti to Via E. Checchi - Via E. Checchi (odd-numbered) to Via Tiburtina (odd-numbered side) to the starting point of Via Casale Galvani. Recognition for civil effects was decreed on 25 July 1963. The building complex is owned by the Pont. Opera per la Preservazione della Fede e la Provision di nuove Chiese in Roma. The architectural project is by Ernesto Vichi.
