The church was built on the Campidoglio during the Middle Ages (before 1192) on the ruins of an insula dating back to the second century and its construction seems to be attributable to the Boccabella family. The name is probably due to the vicinity to the antique location of the market. The interior embodied a single nave and presented a single entry portal. The walls included numerous tombstones.
