Stories and hidden facts: discovering Villa Borghese through educational panels and podcasts

depuis 18 Décembre 2023 à 31 Mai 2024

It is one of the city’s largest public parks, the most central and the most frequented by tourists and Romans alike: centuries-old trees, ponds, Italian gardens, paths, flowerbeds, and large open spaces frame buildings, sculptures, monuments, and fountains, making it one of the richest Roman villas in terms of art and landscape.

To accompany visitors in their discovery of this perfect combination of art, history and nature, its museums, artists and personalities, the Capitoline Superintendency in collaboration with Zètema Progetto Cultura has realized 18 new didactic panels installed near the main entrances and major points of interest of Villa Borghese. On each one of them you can find a general map indicating the monuments and services and informative texts, in Italian and English, with illustrations and photographs.

QR codes on the panels also allow access to short podcasts (lasting about three minutes) that tell the story of the villa and its hidden face, from the 17th-century patronage of the famous Cardinal Scipione Borghese to the events that transformed it into a much-loved public park. Intriguing tales include: the unusual race between a horse and a certain Bertaccini in 1876; the sumptuous banquets set up by the Borghese family in the Loggia dei Vini, cheered by flower petals dropped from the vault using an ingenious theatrical mechanism; or the dairy-ice-cream parlour housed until the 1930s in the Casina delle Rose (today’s Casa del Cinema) where one could enjoy a cup of cream and a glass of custard.
