The 2024 of the Municipal Museums: a year of must-see exhibitions

depuis 12 Décembre 2023 à 31 Mai 2024

From antiquity to contemporary times, from pop icons to the great masters of photography: in 2024, Musei in Comune - Municipal Museums will welcome visitors with a program of exhibition activities designed to satisfy a wide range of tastes.

The Musei Capitolini will open the year with one of Francisco Goya’s masterpieces: El quitasol (The Parasol) will be on display in January alongside Caravaggio’s Buona Ventura, in a dialogue between giants entitled “Goya and Caravaggio: Truth and Rebellion”. A most awaited exhibition will close the year: “Origini e splendori della collezione farnese nella Roma del XVI secolo” on the works of art collected by one of the most powerful dynasties of the Italian Renaissance.

Ancient Rome is at the center of the exhibition program at Mercati di Traiano - Musei dei Fori Imperiali, which will dedicate a large exhibition to the Emperor Elagabalus, and at the Museo dell’Ara Pacis, where “Attori, autori e storie del teatro antico” will make visitors relive the atmosphere of the great Roman theatres. Also at the Ara Pacis Museum is one of the exhibitions of the year: “Franco Fontana. Monografica”, the story of the career of the famous photographer from Modena. The Museo di Roma will pay homage to the politician Giacomo Matteotti in the centenary year of his assassination. The Museo di Roma in Trastevere will focus as always ample space on photography (Hilde Lotz-Bauer, Ouka Leele, Giacomo Pozzi Bellini, Dino Pedriali, Dino Ignani) and  will retrace the artistic life of Rino Gaetano, one of the most beautiful voices of Italian song.

For fans of modern and contemporary art, the choice is wide: “Keith Haring Deleted”, “Estetica della deformazione. Protagonisti dell’espressionismo italiano” and “Reality optional. Miaz Brothers con i maestri del XX secolo” at Galleria d'Arte Moderna; “Genius loci TTOZOI” at the Museo Carlo Bilotti; and “Quotidiana” at Museo di Roma. Space is also given to architecture, with the exhibition “Architetture inabitabili” at Centrale Montemartini; to the combination of art and nature with “Laudato sie! natura e scienza. L’eredità culturale di frate Francesco” at Museo di Roma, “Uno a Uno” and "Natura umana" at the Museo Carlo Bilotti, “Oltre lo spazio, oltre il tempo” at the Museo Civico di Zoologia; and to the Orient with “UKIYOE. Il Mondo Fluttuante” at the Museo di Roma and “Giuseppe Primoli e il fascino dell'oriente” at the Museo Napoleonico.

Finally, several exhibition projects are dedicated to female protagonists of art and culture: “L’arte delle donne a Roma. Secessione, futurismo e ritorno all’ordine”, “Titina Maselli” and “Giancarla Frare. Abitare la distanza”  at the Casino dei Principi di Villa Torlonia, “Maria Barosso” and “Roma pittrice. Le artiste a Roma tra il XVI e XIX secolo al Museo di Roma”.
