Art and culture between the 19th and 20th centuries: the Archives of the Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Roma Capitale

depuis 11 Décembre 2023 à 31 Juillet 2024

An archival and documentary heritage available to scholars, students, connoisseurs and lovers of art and culture of the first half of the twentieth century: a few steps from Trinità dei Monti, in the sixteenth-century former cloistered monastery that now houses masterpieces by great artists active in Rome (Giorgio de Chirico, Giorgio Morandi, Carlo Carrà, Mario Sironi and Giacomo Manzù, to name a few), since 11 December the Galleria d’Arte Moderna - GAM di Roma Capitale has opened its Archives to the public. The initiative, made possible by careful study and inventory work, is promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Cultura, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali and is a prelude to the 100GAM celebrations and events planned for the Gallery’s centennial (in 2025).

Connected to the valuable museum collection, the Archives collects over 1,600 volumes dating from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century: monographs of the artists, publications on the works, catalogs of exhibitions in Rome and at GAM, as well as a collection of historical volumes on the Quadriennale Nazionale d’Arte di Roma and the Biennali in Rome and Venice. Hundreds of biographical and exhibition information on individual artists, along with exhibition brochures and newspaper articles, can also be consulted in the Fondo Artisti - Artists Fund, which includes the Mimì Quilici-Buzzacchi Archive, the first nucleus of the future Archivio Donna e Artista - Women and Artists Archive. Still in the process of being inventoried is the Archivio Acquisti - Purchases Archive, consisting of more than 250 Deliberations produced by the Governorate of Rome and the Capitoline Council between 1921 and 2002 for the acquisitions of works in the GAM collection.

Access to the Archives is possible by appointment only by writing to info@galleriaartemodernaroma.it. The area available for consultation, with free admission, offers a workstation with a computer and WI-FI connection.
