San Giacomo in Augusta

In 1338 Cardinal Pietro Colonna founded the hospital of San Giacomo ("in Augusta" because of its vicinity to the ruins of the mausoleum of Augustus). In 1529 the hospital was given to the Capuchin friars who later , in 1561, enlarged the building. The construction of the church started in 1592 after a project by Francesco Caprini da Volterra, and it was completed in 1600 by Carlo Maderno. The facade has two orders: in the centre of the lower order, created  by Francesco da Volterra, is a portal with Corinthian columns and two minor doors on its sides. The upper order, by Maderno, has a central balcony with a shell-like shaped niche with a gable on top. The interior has a very original ellipstic plan covered by an elliptic dome. Along the aisles are three chapels with pieces works of art dating back to the 15th and 18th century.
