This is a pope's country residence, begun by Sixtus IV around 1480 and completed by Leo X. Built near the Tiber in an area rich in game, it declined at the end of the 17th century due to malaria and was gradually abandoned. It was then given to the monastery of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, which rented it to private individuals. In 1959, the entire complex was purchased and restored by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.
Today the building houses the offices and management of the nearby San Giovanni Battista hospital, owned by the same Order.
