Custodians of Cures
The “Apoteca ad usum semplicitarie” – this appears to have been its original name – is the oldest shop in Rome to carry out pharmaceutical processes on the premises. The first official documentation of its existence is a change of ownership in 1672.
Inside you can still see the original beautiful frescoed ceiling, the counters and shelves in inlaid wood, and the marble floor, as well as the old mortars and jars decorated with the coat of arms of the Royal family, which contained medicinal herbs, extracts, and ointments. The sign, in fact, reveals how their precious knowledge of remedies was also at the service of the Royal family at the end of the 1800s. Clearly the pharmacy also offered its knowledge to other patrons, who turned to its professionals in search of the right remedy.
Over the centuries, the custodians of the secrets and doses of the principal remedies have written and jealously preserved important chapters of medicine. The Sbarigia - Tassoni family has preserved the alchemical remedies since 1948. Giulio Tassoni, the current owner, says he still has many of the valuable old instruments and tools, such as an old mortar on a marble column, a brass scale for weighing babies, an antique sterilizer, and many other instruments used to prepare drugs over the past centuries.
While preserving its ancient heritage and combining it with current pharmaceutical and health needs, the Tassoni family has established an internal galenic laboratory, where they produce prescription drugs. The pharmacy’s customers, who rely on the expertise of its staff, can also request all types of clinical analysis, as well as specialized examinations like the Holter monitor test.
For those who like to pamper themselves, Tassoni has also created its own line of perfumes with enveloping fragrances and elegant packaging, as well as a line of cosmetic creams. Because well-being should be seen, as well as felt.
