From April 4 to 6, 2026, the Botanical Garden hosts the Hanami (花見), literally "flower gazing”, or the blossoming of Japanese sakura cherry trees, in collaboration with the Green and Landscape Festival, offering us an unmissable spectacle: the cherry blossoming becomes an opportunity to closely observe a brief and significant natural phenomenon, which lasts only a few days, within a historic garden in the heart of the city.
The event doesn't have a set route: the public can move freely, in a stroll through the botanical collections leading to the Japanese garden that represents the centre of the hanami. Stopping to watch the pale pink petals fluttering as they fall is an integral part of the experience, as is sitting, lingering under the blossoming trees, and sharing food. The picnic is intended as a cultural gesture and a moment of connection, not an organized activity. Hanami is therefore an invitation to admire the beauty of nature at its peak, letting the petals fall.
During the days, meetings and demonstrations dedicated to Japanese culture will accompany the visit. It is also possible to participate in a simple, optional symbolic gesture, typical of Japanese culture, related to the theme of impermanence: letting go of a thought and welcoming what comes. A unique way to experience Easter in one of the most surprising places of the Roman spring.
