The Argentina Theater hosts Marivaux's The false confidences, directed by Arturo Cirillo.
Written in 1737, The false confidences (original title: Les Fausses Confidences) is a prose comedy in three acts by Pierre Marivaux, first performed in the very same year at the Hôtel de Bourgogne in Paris by the Théâtre de la comédie italienne. At the centre of the plot is the young Dorante, a fallen nobleman, who becomes employed as a steward by the wealthy widow Araminta, a very austere and rational woman, in order to make her fall in love with him and thus obtain her wealth. Aiding Dorante in the subtle mechanism of seduction is the crafty servant Dubois, who helps the young man break down the woman's defenses. This sets in motion a process of seduction in which, surprisingly, a real and concrete feeling blossoms.
The play, one of the author's most celebrated, whose title is already an oxymoron, is therefore a refined comedy on the theme of love, in which every line is full of innuendo, with multiple meanings, alluding to something deeper. A text that is therefore always timely, revolving around a story of love and money, amidst attraction and deceptions of the heart.
Starring Elena Sofia Ricci and Arturo Cirillo, and with Rosario Giglio, Orietta Notari, Giacinto Palmarini, Francesco Petruzzelli, Giulia Trippetta, and Giacomo Vigentini.
