Urs Fischer. After Nature

Known for his innovative use of materials and techniques and his exploration of themes related to perception and representation, Swiss artist Urs Fischer presents a new suite of eight paintings, a large-scale soft sculpture, and an interactive video installation at the Gagosian Gallery in Rome.

The exhibition revisits the series of works created between 2007 and 2010 and explicitly references Man Ray’s photograph “Dust Breeding”, which captures the buildup of grime on the surface of Marcel Duchamp’s “The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (The Large Glass)”. In the new paintings, created on aluminum with dust salvaged from artist’s studio floor and exhibiting a more handmade feel than their predecessors, the chaotic distribution of dust particles evokes arid landscapes or the scatter of stars across the firmament.

In the center, a soft sculpture attended by two smaller, amoebic forms depicts a recumbent female figure. The work recalls the “She - A Cathedral” project, created in 1966 by Niki de Saint Phalle, Jean Tinguely, P.O. Ultvedt and Pontus Hultén for the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and represents a visceral embodiment of the force of gravity, a static locus of attraction on which to sit, pause or contemplate the rest of the exhibition.

In the video installation that completes the exhibition, a tribute to Dan Graham’s “Time Delay Room”, viewers watch live footage of themselves with a five-second delay, inspiring reflection on the idea that we now inhabit a perpetual present, a state in which reliable human memory has been reduced to the very briefest of durations. In conjunction with the exhibition, Fischer’s sculpture Dance (2025) is on display in the Renaissance gardens of Villa Medici - French Academy.
