From 19 February to 7 March, the stage of the Costanzi Theatre hosts the world premiere of Lucia Ronchetti's evocative opera in a new Italian version commissioned by the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma.
The opera, performed for the first time as a concert at the Bockenheimer Depot in Frankfurt in 2021, is inspired by Dante's extraordinary poem, with Tiziano Scarpa’s epilogue in the Italian production, directed by French-German David Hemann in his debut in Rome.
The renowned Italian composer transposes the immortal visions and words of the first cantica of the Divine Comedy into music, creating an evocative journey through sound and language, in which the Supreme Poet meets historical, legendary, and damned characters in the various circles of Hell.
With sets by Jo Schramm, lighting by Fabrice Kebour, and splendid costumes by Maria Grazia Chiuri, it features an exceptional cast – Tommaso Ragno (Dante), Laura Catrani (Francesca), Andreas Fischer (Lucifer) and Leonardo Cortellazzi (Ulysses), in their first engagement at the Costanzi, and the Neue Vocalsolisten ensemble – accompanied by the Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, conducted respectively by Tito Ceccherini and Ciro Visco.
