Piazza Benedetto Cairoli

Benedetto Cairoli Square is dedicated to Benedetto Cairoli (1825-1889), a great fighter in the Five Days of Milan, but also at Custoza, Varese, Calatafimi, Mentana and Giuseppe Garibaldi's aide in the Expedition of the Thousand. Having ceased military life, he was deputy of Pavia for 30 years, then elected Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Agriculture. The square, formerly also called Tagliacozza because of some houses that belonged to Isabella Orsini, lady of Tagliacozzo, was enlarged several times, especially when Via Arenula was opened at the end of the 19th century. An imposing and important presence is undoubtedly the beautiful Church of S. Carlo ai Catinari, once included in the perimeter of the Regola district, but now belonging to the S. Eustachio district.
