Palazzo della Cancelleria is hosting an exhibition organized by Jordan’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in collaboration with the Vatican. This is an exceptional event celebrating 30 years of diplomatic relations between Jordan and the Holy See, as well as coinciding with the Vatican’s Jubilee Year celebrations under the name “Pilgrims of Hope” and the 60th anniversary of Pope Paul VI’s visit to Jordan in 1964.
A thoughtfully designed space allow visitors to embark on an immersive journey into Jordan’s sacred past, a timeless sanctuary that witnessed the birth of the first chapters of Christianity. The quiet solitude of early Christian worship is evoked through the tunnels of a cave, while advanced visuals and soundscapes bring to life pivotal moments in Christian history, such as the baptism of Jesus or the prophetic ascension of Elijah.
The exhibition features a unique collection of approximately 90 original artefacts that were carefully selected from around 34 archaeological sites in Jordan. Many of these artifacts are being displayed outside Jordan for the very first time and include: intricately carved tombstones and crosses; ceremonial relics and baptismal cups used in early Christian rituals; jewels and coins revealing the cultural and economic fabric of ancient Christian communities; and mosaics and architectural fragments showcasing the craftsmanship of early Christian artists.
