The area around the Church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme is rich in archaeological ruins referable to a single complex, Palazzo del Sessorio, an imperial villa of the Severan age (3rd century AD).
In the area there was also the Circus Varianus (630 m long), whose construction began under Caracalla and was completed by Elagabalus (Sesto Vario Avito Bassiano), from whom the circus took its name.
