Tomba nel Bioparco

The tomb was discovered in 1971 in the Zoological Garden during the construction of the 'monkey village'.

The tomb, currently accessible through a trap door, is badly damaged. A small wall made of small blocks of tufa and slightly projecting brickwork is still preserved: the latter functioned as brackets and supported a layer of tiles that, on opposite sides, leaned against the tufa wall, thus creating four overlapping loculi.

Still visible are two other loculi, dug directly into the tufa, arranged in parallel and surmounted by a frescoed lunette. The painting, detached and restored, is now in the Antiquarium Comunale: it is delicate, characterised by a discreet verism and a chiaroscuro technique. It depicts an aquatic landscape, perhaps an allegory of the afterlife, populated by ducks, the souls of the dead, in various and lively poses, arranged in perfect symmetry at the sides of a fountain with a square basin, gushing water from a vase placed on a small column.

The style of the painting and the presence of numerous branded tiles date the monument to the Severan period, more precisely around 210 AD.
