The Museum of Rome Palazzo Braschi hosts the exhibition Painter Rome. Female artists at work between the 16th and 19th centuries, curated by Ilaria Miarelli Mariani, director of the Capitoline Superintendence of Civic Museums Directorate and Raffaella Morselli of the University of Rome La Sapienza, with the collaboration of Ilaria Arcangeli of the University of Chieti.
The exhibition focuses on the many female artists active in Rome from the 16th to the 19th century, with a rich, diversified and highly artistic production, often unfairly relegated to the background from a historiographical point of view.
Through around 130 works, the exhibition highlights the artists present in the Capitoline collections, such as Caterina Ginnasi, Maria Felice Tibaldi Subleyras, Angelika Kaufmann, Laura Piranesi, Marianna Candidi Dionigi, Louise Seidler and Emma Gaggiotti Richards, as well as a selection of others notable artists active in the capital such as Lavinia Fontana, Artemisia Gentileschi, Maddalena Corvina, Giovanna Garzoni, and many others, whose corpus of works is being reconstructed in these last decades of research. The exhibition also highlights all the different artistic languages, genres and techniques through themes and representative figures.
Finally, the exhibition describes the gradual insertion of female painters into the international market, with the slow achievement of full access to the most important institutions of the city, such as the Accademia di San Luca and the Accademia dei Virtuosi al Pantheon.
Promoted by Roma Capitale, Department of Culture, Capitoline Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, the exhibition is organized by Zètema Progetto Cultura.
