The Teatro dell'Opera di Roma hosts Richard Strauss' masterpiece in the staging proposed by Barrie Kosky, who returns to the Capitoline theatre after the great success of The Magic Flute in 2018.
The one-act opera, based on Oscar Wilde's 1891 play of the same name, was composed in 1905 and was staged for the first time in Dresden on 9 December of the same year, achieving an incredible success.
The famous Australian director, winner of the 2023 Abbiati Prize, presents an original Salome, already appreciated at the Oper Frankfurt in 2020: the fascinating and fatal princess is a mysterious and elusive figure who seems to take shape through the other protagonists of the drama, all enveloped by Katrin Lea Tag's obscure set design - a black box - and illuminated, at times, by cones of light.
An international cast is on stage, including the charismatic Sara Jakubiak in the role of Salome, John Kaszak (the stepfather Herod) and Katarina Dalayman (the mother Herodias), accompanied by the Orchestra of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, conducted by Marc Albrecht, an extraordinary interpreter of the Straussian repertoire in his debut at the Costanzi.
