On the 30th anniversary of the mafia attacks in San Giovanni in Laterano and San Giorgio al Velabro, the Baths of Caracalla welcome the tribute exhibition to the Sicilian photographer, champion of civil rights.
A selection of 92 large-format pictures summarizes fifty years of Letizia Battaglia's photographic work (1971-2020) with iconic, less known, or unpublished images. Without pre-established paths, the shots of the great photographer narrate the many aspects of her way of doing photography in a timeless, non-chronological, athematic way. Senza fine lets itself be discovered through a visit to the Baths of Caracalla, that add two new environments to a narrative focus within the monumental natatio, with other photographic nuclei.
The evocative setting pays homage to another great artist: the architect Lina Bo Bardi. We owe her the display units in tempered glass plates of the Museo de Arte de São Paulo, in Brazil, crystals like a suspended forest, with large format double-sided photographs that inhabit four different environments, thus creating an open, non-vertical installation and hierarchical, of photographic works.
The exhibition structures of Letizia Battaglia's photographs are inspired by her famous cavaletes of 1968.
Promoted by the Special Superintendency of Rome, directed by Daniela Porro, organized by Electa in collaboration with the Letizia Battaglia Archive and the Falcone Foundation for the Arts, the exhibition is curated by Paolo Falcone.
