Guided tours and lectures to discover Rome’s historic villas

desde 2 Mayo 2023 hasta 8 Noviembre 2023

The beauty of Rome does not end up with its immense artistic, archaeological and architectural heritage. To increase its charm and make it a unique city in the world contributes its extraordinary natural heritage (almost 4 thousand hectares excluding reserves and protected areas), which includes great Baroque aristocratic villas, romantic 19th-century promenades and “minor” villas realized after the unification of Italy.

To promote knowledge of the city and its historic villas, Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Cultura, Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali launched the initiative “Le ville raccontano”, scheduled from May to November: a series of lectures and guided tours in which it is possible to participate free of charge to explore specific themes of the culture of greenery and landscape.

Guided by art historians and archaeologists from the Capitoline Superintendency, participants will thus have the chance to go on a discovery tour of fascinating places and stories in the capital’s most important parks or inside buildings now converted into museum venues. These include for example Villa Borghese (from the 17th to the 19th centuries a marvelous setting for banquets and banquets) to the Casino dell’Aranciera (now the Bilotti Museum), the house-museum of Pietro Canonica or the Casina delle Civette in Villa Torlonia.

The guided tours will be joined, starting June 7, by a series of lectures at the Casino dell’Orologio in Villa Borghese led by scholars and experts from the Capitoline Superintendency. Addressed topics will include the culture of greenery and landscape, the use of water in historic gardens, their literary and public perception, design choices, the peculiarities of furnishings and patronage.
