Around 300 free events across more than 220 venues in Rome, allowing everyone to discover the extraordinary heritage found within the city. For 14 years, Open House Rome has been telling the story of the city’s past and present through the lens of architecture and design, with a vast program spanning every era and style, opening historic buildings, archaeological sites, sites of excellence, innovative cultural spaces, urban infrastructure, architectural studios and even private homes to the public.
Launched in London in 1992 and now held in 49 cities worldwide, the festival arrived in Rome in 2012 thanks to the Open City Roma association, with the aim of showcasing a city different from that of traditional tourist visits. The cornerstone of the initiative remains the special opening of buildings normally closed to the public or difficult to access, which are, of course, particularly noteworthy for their architectural features. Among the venues open to the public this year are, for example, the Italian Space Agency (ASI), the Chiocciola at Villa Medici, Forte Aurelia, the Horti Sallustiani, the Semenzaio di San Sisto Vecchio, the Mausoleum of the Equinozi, the INAIL Building and Palazzo Salviati.
The events for the 2026 edition are organised into four thematic areas: Public Space Architecture (such as Piazza Pia, Piazza Augusto Imperatore, the Colosseo and Fori Imperiali metro station on Line C, and Piazza dei Cinquecento), Inclusive City (with tours in Italian Sign Language, multisensory tours, and tours for teenagers and adults with autism spectrum disorders), City in Flux, Heroic Engineering, and Designing Rome through a Female Lens. As in previous editions, in addition to the special openings, the program includes guided tours, exhibitions and workshops (for adults and children) spread across various neighborhoods of the city, from the historic center to the more contemporary areas.
