On 24 and 25 July 2026, the Circus Maximus will host Sergei Prokofiev’s famous three-act ballet, inspired by William Shakespeare’s tragedy, as part of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma’s summer season.
A masterpiece of the ballet repertoire, Romeo and Juliet is staged in John Cranko’s choreography, first performed in Venice in 1958 and considered one of the most remarkable interpretations of the twentieth century.
The South African choreographer and dancer’s version powerfully brings to life the story of the two young lovers from the rival Montague and Capulet families, who, bound by a deep yet impossible love, face a tragic ending.
On stage, with evocative pas de deux and magnificent ensemble scenes, the Corps de Ballet of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, led by Eleonora Abbagnato, performs a show of great dramatic impact to the overwhelming notes of the Russian composer, performed by the Orchestra of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, conducted by Ido Arad.
