Two large monumental basins, a shrine likely dedicated to the cult of Hercules, and two tombs of the Republican period were discovered during the preventive archaeological excavation campaign conducted by the Special Superintendency of Rome of the Ministry of Culture, directed by Daniela Porro, for the implementation of an urban planning program in the area of Parco delle Acacie 2, along via di Pietralata.
Begun in the summer of 2022, the investigations, under the scientific direction of Fabrizio Santi, archaeologist with the Special Superintendency of Rome, cover a vast area of approximately four hectares. They are still ongoing and have revealed a large area of approximately one hectare of
great interest, testifying to occupation from the 5th-4th century BC to the 1st century AD, and, in part, also between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. During the excavations, a long road axis was also uncovered on land crossed by a watercourse that flowed into the nearby Aniene river.
The discovered tombs provide important evidence of the occupation of this part of the suburb by a wealthy family group, while the two monumental pools could be structures connected to ritual or productive activities, or for water collection: an in-depth scientific study will allow us to contextualize these findings.
In a few months, once the excavation is completed, a study will begin for a plan to enhance the area.
