Palazzo Sacchetti

This is the most imposing palace in Via Giulia, designed and built by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger (1483-1546), whose residence it was, as indicated by the inscription on the left of the balcony that reads 'Domus Antonii Sangalli Architecti - MDXLIII'. On Sangallo's death the palace was sold to the Ricci di Montepulciano, who had it restored and enlarged by Nanni di Baccio Bigio. In 1648 it was sold to the Marchesi Sacchetti.
The façade has a brick facing; in the centre is a tall marble portal surmounted by a balcony supported by corbels. On the sides there are three windows on each side closed by grilles and surmounted by architraves, with sills supported by corbels. The other floors have seven windows each: those on the first floor with architraves resting on brackets, those on the mezzanine floor are smaller and square in shape, those on the third floor are surmounted by architraves; the top has a rich cornice with brackets. From the courtyard, the staircase leads to the upper flats, including the Salone dei mappamondi with its two large antique world maps (terrestrial and celestial) dating from the end of the 17th century, the work of the cosmographer Vincenzo Coronelli. The façade on Via del Cefalo, at the corner of which is a fountain with a putto between dolphins from the 16th century, has the same architectural order. In the porticoed courtyard inside there is a 15th century tile depicting the Madonna and Child on the left. In the Audience Hall are painted the Stories of David by Francesco Salviati from 1553-1554, and in the Gallery the Holy Family and Adam and Eve by Pietro da Cortona. There is a small Italian garden with hedges, a fountain, statues, benches and a beautiful nymphaeum.
