A bridge between cultures
The festival aims to strengthen cultural exchanges between China and Italy, promoting mutual understanding and friendship among people because, thanks to its lightness and timeless charm, the kite becomes a symbol of meeting between cultures, offering an unforgettable experience of sharing and discovery.
The Weifang Kite Festival, known as the "World Capital of Kites", was born in the spring and autumn period in China over 2,400 years ago. Kites (formerly known as "paper kites") are not only a popular entertainment tool, but also have various cultural connotations, such as prayer for blessings, military communications and scientific exploration. In 2023, the Weifang International Kite Festival was listed by UNESCO on the "Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity", becoming an important symbol of global cultural exchange. Rome, the western terminus of the ancient Silk Road, has always been closely linked to Eastern civilization, so the introduction of the Weifang Kite Festival in the Aqueduct Park is not only a continuation of the cultural resonance of "Belt and Road Initiative", but also a tribute to the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Italy (2025) and a resumption of dialogue between civilizations in Asia and Europe using kites as a means.
Sponsored by the Chinese Embassy in Italy, the Lazio Region, the Appia Antica Regional Park and the International Kite Federation, the festival is organized by the Sino-Italian International Cultural Association Traditional Orchestra "Melodies di Seta" With the contribution of Roma VII City Hall and in collaboration with numerous cultural organizations and associations.
