Chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi a Monte Mario

Also known by the name of Sant'Onofrio in Campagna al Borgo Clementino, it was built to a design by Pietro Passalacqua between 1667 and 1676, thanks to a bequest by Bartolomeo Neri, prothonotary apostolic and canon of the church of Saints Celso and Giuliano. The church was built on the site of a country chapel, previously built by Neri in 1660. It was not consecrated until 2 July 1728 by Pope Benedict XIII.The bell tower was completed in 1678; the interior decoration of the church, in Baroque style (including fine stuccoes of angels), is by Pietro Baragiola; the apse arch was added in the 18th century. The high altar, the work of Giuseppe Cacci, is in polychrome marble, decorated with Corinthian-style columns.The church has been a parish since 15 October 1703, erected by decree of Cardinal Vicar Gaspare Carpegna Pastoralis officii, and initially entrusted to the priests of the Order of St Jerome of the Congregation of Blessed Peter of Pisa (Gerolamini). Once this congregation was suppressed, the parish passed to the Scolopian Fathers with the bull of Pius XI Inter instituta of 12 January 1933, who still govern it today.In 2003, a new church was built next to the old one, designed by Anna Claudia Cenciarini, for festive celebrations; in modern style, it is developed in width rather than in height and is characterised externally by a tufa wall face with a marble bas-relief on the façade depicting Scenes from the Life of Saint Francis, internally by a single quadrangular room lit by a central circular skylight, with a semicircular apse housing the presbytery.
