Chiesa di San Cleto

It was built in 1994-1995 to a design by architect Savelli and consecrated by Cardinal Camillo Ruini on 25 April 1996.The church is a parish seat, erected on 25 July 1965 with the decree of Cardinal Vicar Luigi Traglia Supremi officii and entrusted to the priests of the congregation of Jesus Priest. On the outside, the church looks like a desert tent with a central spire converging upwards, ending in a polychrome glass lantern. It is flanked by a reinforced concrete structure that serves as a bell tower: three small bells are inserted in it.In the floor of the entrance hall is the coat of arms of Pope John Paul II. The interior of the church is circular, with a laminated wood roof and Carrara marble flooring. Based on the plans of architect and priest Giampiero Arabia, the altar, seat, baptistery, ambo, the location of the Madonna and the design of the flooring were created using the mosaic technique.Great scenic effect is given by the back wall of the presbytery, which has as its subject the Old and New Testaments, represented by a single vine, which opens into two branches: on the left branch there are twelve leaves representing the twelve tribes of Israel, with four bunches of grapes, recalling the four borders of the world and thus the universality of the divine message; on the right branch there are instead eleven leaves, representing the apostles (with the exception of the traitor Judas) with three bunches of grapes, recalling the divine Trinity. The numerical symbolism continues with the number seven, given by the bunches of grapes, indicating the seven sacraments. In the centre of the composition is the figure of the Lamb, which is in a perfect vertical line with the Crucifix hanging from above and with the image of Christ as master of the altar. The Lamb is surrounded by four small roundels in which the Alpha and Omega and the abbreviated Greek names of Jesus and Christ are recalled. The composition also includes other typical elements of Christian iconography: ears of wheat and fish. Finally, the presence of the image of a large fish, which runs through the entire mosaic, is also recognisable. The wooden statue of the Madonna (Ortisei 1906) is set within an almond-shaped mosaic composition with stylised stars. Next to it is a wooden statue of St. Cletus, the second successor of Peter on the cathedra of the diocese of Rome.On the walls, a series of stained glass windows give light to the room: they consist of 42 panels depicting significant episodes from the Old and New Testaments, from the creation of the stars to the Annunciation.
