‘We rise by lifting the others’ is the name of the evocative site-specific installation by Marinella Senatore, who wanted to give the Piazza Venezia Metro C construction site a new and captivating look, covering anonymous cement silos with her art.
After ‘Costellazioni di Roma’ (Constellations of Rome) by Pietro Ruffo, therefore, the Campanian visual artist, trained in music, fine arts and cinema, and specialised in photography direction at the Scuola Nazionale di Cinema di Roma, has signed the area of the iconic square affected by the works, depicting, in her own way, among shades of red, yellow, pink, white and black, the men and women she has met along her human and artistic path. 10 metres high and 64 metres wide, ‘We rise by lifting the others’ covers an area of almost 700 square metres, transforming the construction site, normally a place of discomfort for the citizens, of noise, smoke and dust, into an unusual place of art.
For the realisation of her work, Senatore was inspired by Rome's theatre tradition, by the city as an open-air stage, in which a series of suggestions – architecture, landscape, building site, sounds, colours – overlap and harmonise poetically with each other and with the prestigious environment that hosts them.
Progetto Murales, an initiative promoted by the consortium led by Webuild and Vianini Lavori, aims to transform the Stazione Venezia construction site into one of the largest open-air exhibition spaces, an innovative cultural platform that projects itself into the future, thanks to the exhibition of significant works of contemporary art created by artists of international standing.
In fact, Murales was created to invite citizens and tourists to reflect on the evolution of cities and how infrastructural projects should develop a new model of a city on a human scale.
For this reason, until 2026, every four months, the silos of Piazza Venezia will host the unpublished works of famous visual artists who will exhibit their personal interpretation of the city's transformations, through the exploration of urban paradigms to promote an ongoing dialogue with Rome, transforming the construction site into an opportunity for urban regeneration.
