Gallery 5, the most dramatic of MAXXI’s galleries, is hosting a new chapter in the dialogue between fashion and the museum ten years after the “Bellissima” exhibition that traced the history of haute couture from 1945 to 1968.
Curated by Maria Luisa Frisa and in collaboration with Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana, the exhibition investigates contemporary and international fashion and its role in the collective experience and imagination between 2015 and today through a rich collection of clothes, accessories, archive materials and videos. Each of the approximately 50 creations on display carries with it a story but is also a tool for reflecting on the present, for exploring the questions fashion raises, demonstrating its ability to respond and adapt to social, political, economic and cultural changes.
The clothes and accessories are set so as to create unexpected encounters between extraordinary haute couture pieces and more independent experiences, without hierarchies. Along the exhibition route, we can thus admire the virtuosities of Viktor&Rolf, the creations of Maria Grazia Chiuri for Christian Dior and those of Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli, the great contemporary season of Italian fashion, from the most established protagonists such as Giorgio Armani, Miuccia Prada and Dolce&Gabbana, to the most recent experiences and the new generation of designers represented by ACT N°1 and Marco Rambaldi.
Some objects punctuate the exhibition itinerary, underlining the exhibition’s atmospheres: in particular, the extraordinary bronze and brass carapace decorated with silver coins and gems created by Bvlgari to a design by artist Francesco Vezzoli is a spectacular and monumental object that makes us reflect on the ever-present oscillation of taste between massification and radical individualism.
