Planetarium and Astronomy Museum

Planetario di Roma

Digital technology, a real-time updated database, immersive experiences, events and activities geared toward both adults and kids: are the features of the Planetarium of Rome, inside the Museum of Roman Civilization, reopened after eight years of redevelopment and safety works.

New ways of “looking” at the universe and many innovations are the keywords, above all on the technological side. The old optical projector has been replaced by the “Sky Explorer”, cutting-edge software: the new digital planetarium, equipped with video projectors with 4K resolution, is able to reconstruct the surface of Earth, Moon, Mars with extreme realism, the brightest stars, and to explore more distant galaxies and nebulae. Furthermore, the possibility of storing a large amount of data and providing updates in real-time allows visitors to be informed about news and discoveries from the scientific community. The software makes it possible to dialogue with an international community of planetariums, sharing research and studies, even live, methods of narration and creative solutions at the service of scientific dissemination.

As it is customary for the Planetarium of Rome, real astronomical shows lead the public to discover the secrets and beauty of the universe. Thanks to an ad hoc audio system, visitors can interact with the “sky”, becoming protagonists of the scene while respecting real dynamics. You can admire the Earth from afar, flying over planets, nebulae and galaxies, re-experiencing the fundamental events of space exploration and the most recent astronomy. The reopening of the Planetarium also marks the resumption of activities and events focused on the transversal nature of languages, ranging from astronomy to history, from geology to art.

The dome of the Planetarium - a hemispherical screen of 300 square meters and 14 meters in diameter - offers a very engaging vision. Combined with the new comfortable reclining armchairs, arranged in a circular layout, it enhances the experience of the immersive "journey" avoiding the cinema effect.
