C'era una volta...Scugnizzi

C'era una volta...Scugnizzi

From 18 November to 13 December 2026, the Teatro Sistina hosts the exciting, much-loved musical inspired by Nanni Loy’s 1989 film, returning to the famous Roman theatre stage after fifteen years.

Written and directed by Claudio Mattone, C’era una volta… Scugnizzi – which has captivated Italian audiences since its debut in 2002 – is a universal narrative about the fragility, dreams, struggles, mistakes and hopes of young people, blending poetry and reality.

Against the backdrop of Naples, Saverio De Lucia and Raffaele Capasso, known as ‘o russo’, meet as teenagers in the juvenile detention centre in Nisida. After their release, the two young men go their separate ways; Saverio becomes a socially committed priest, while Raffaele enters the world of the Camorra.  Twenty years later, the two men meet again and find themselves locked in an increasingly bitter conflict, culminating in ‘o russo’s dramatic act: in a fit of rage, he kills Saverio, causing a collective reaction of rebellion and protest that involves the whole city.

With Bruno Garofalo’s sets, a cast of extraordinary performers brings to life a compelling and contemporary story, set to the notes of director Claudio Mattone’s splendid soundtrack – a tribute to Neapolitan song in the year of its nomination for UNESCO World Heritage status – with choreography by Gino Landi and costumes by Francesca R. Scudiero.
