On 16 May 2026, the Rome War Cemetery in Testaccio will be open to the public for a special event as part of War Graves Week, the global initiative organised by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC).
The event invites you to discover the personal stories – and to share your own – linked to military service during the First and Second World Wars, which lie behind the Commonwealth war graves in your local communities.
Across Italy, where the CWGC cares for 51,162 burials in 57 war cemeteries and 123 total burial sites, as well as 5,921 names on 6 war memorials, war stories are hidden in plain sight – etched into headstones in cemeteries and memorial sites; Behind each stone is a life, a family, and a story of service and sacrifice, forming part of a global legacy spanning more than 150 countries and territories.
The programme includes a special opening of the monumental cemetery, the burial place of 426 Commonwealth soldiers who fell during the Second World War, from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm, with guided tours at 10.30 am and 2.30 pm.
