To mark the arrival of spring, the Roma Capitale Rose Garden is reopening its gates to the public. From 11 April (ten days earlier than the traditional opening to mark Rome’s birthday) to 14 June, the garden opposite the Palatine Hill is ready to welcome all visitors who wish to admire, from 8.30 am to 7.30 pm, the blossoming of one of the most extraordinary botanical collections of roses.
Unique in the world for its spectacular location and offering a magnificent view stretching from the Circus Maximus to the Palatine Hill, the bell tower of Santa Maria in Cosmedin and the Vittoriano, the Rose Garden is a haven of peace and harmony on the slopes of the Aventine Hill. The upper part of the garden (covering approximately 10,000 square metres and shaped like an amphitheatre) is home to over a thousand varieties of old and modern roses, coming from all over the world, from the Far East to South Africa, from New Zealand to the Americas.
Some species of botanical roses date back as far as 40 million years, yet all are remarkably unique and beautiful. The lower section of the Rose Garden (open to visitors from 18 May) features the roses entered in the international “Premio Roma” competition for new varieties (held on 17 May, with an awards ceremony open to the public) and the winners from previous years.
Admission is free. You can book a guided tour by sending an email to rosetoromacapitale@comune.roma.it.
