Omaggio a Carlo Maratti (Homage to Carlo Maratti)

Omaggio a Carlo Maratti-Foto: locandina ufficiale della mostra

The exhibition at the Museo del Corso, opened on the occasion of the fourth centenary of the birth of the famous painter Carlo Maratti (1625 - 1713), one of the most important protagonists of late 17th-century Rome, curated by Simonetta Prosperi Valenti Rodinò, presents around 40 paintings, among which the famous Portrait of Gaspare Marcaccioni stands out, a masterpiece kept abroad for years and recently returned to Italy, thanks to the commitment of the Fondazione Roma for the safeguarding of the national artistic heritage.

It’s a selection of works from the Fondazione Roma's permanent collection, which are displayed alongside some of the artist's paintings from important national and international collections. Together, these works provide the public with a comprehensive overview of Maratti's key works: portraits, sacred subjects, and Arcadian themes.

Born in Camerano in the Marche region in 1625, Carlo Maratti moved to Rome as a child, joining the workshop of Andrea Sacchi of whom became favorite pupil and the heir to the classicist tradition of Bolognese painters such as Carracci, which he enriched with influences from Guido Reni, Domenichino, Lanfranco, and Bernini. The artist, known for his numerous works depicting the Virgin Mary, for which he was nicknamed "Carluccio delle Madonne", decorated the principal churches of Rome and Italy with grandiose altarpieces, frescoing the Altieri and Quirinale palaces. Appreciated throughout Europe, he was also the most highly regarded portrait painter of his time, as demonstrated by his celebrated portraits of popes.

With free admission, the exhibition offers visitors to Palazzo Sciarra Colonna the opportunity to explore Carlo Maratti's artistic qualities and the impact his works had on subsequent generations of masters.
