Fiume, Dalmatian and Istrian Exiles (MEDIF)

Vittoriano-Foto: turismoroma

The Vittoriano hosts the exhibition Fiume, Dalmatian and Istrian Exiles (MEDIF), which, eighty years after the end of the Second World War, retraces the history of the exiles from Fiume, Dalmatia, and Istria, restoring truth and dignity to a chapter in Italian history that has been silenced, minimized, or forgotten for too long.

The project stems from an initiative by the Federation of Associations of Exiles from Istria, Fiume, and Dalmatia (with the Adriatic Coordination Committee, the Multimedia Documentation Centre, and the National Association of Venice, Giulia, and Dalmatia), supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture. Twenty years after the establishment of the Day of Remembrance (Law No. 92 of March 30, 2004), and in recognition of the symbolic and patriotic role played by the National Monument of Vittorio Emanuele II, the desire of then President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi to bring to an end the Risorgimento journey at the Vittoriano with a space dedicated to remembrance, leading visitors to retrace the Italian identity of the lands of the Upper Eastern Adriatic.

Through documents, photographs, objects, and firsthand accounts selected and organized by a multidisciplinary scientific committee, the narrative and dynamic exhibition - housed in the Grottone Rooms and curated by architect Massimiliano Tita - is designed to engage the visitor through variations in geometry and perspective. The experience is guided by two main elements: a dark, material casing that evokes the depth of history, and a continuous, suspended corten steel ribbon, symbolizing time travel.

The multimedia exhibition is also rich, featuring unique interactive installations documenting key events, firsthand accounts, and the names and faces of those involved. A symbolic installation commemorating the Foiba victims and Norma Cossetto also has a powerful emotional impact: a Thonet chair with a monocle trained on a red rose among the rocks. The exhibition concludes with a multipurpose room intended for institutional events, at whose center we find the Italian flag alongside the banners of Istria, Fiume, and Zara.

Conceived as a lively and welcoming space, the exhibition is aimed particularly at young people and students, but is open to anyone who wishes to engage with the past, to build a shared historical awareness within a European context, so that the history of the Adriatic border is no longer merely a wound, but becomes a frontier of encounter and dialogue.
