It was built in the 1970s based on a design by architects Ennio Canino and Viviana Rizzi, and inaugurated on March 6, 1977.
The church is a parish church, established by Cardinal Vicar Francesco Marchetti Selvaggiani on February 1, 1937 with the Redemptoris mundi decree, and entrusted to the Scalabrinian Fathers since 1950. Since 1994, it has been the seat of the cardinal title of the Most Holy Redeemer in Val Melaina. The first Cardinal with this title was Ersilio Tonini.
The church was visited by Pope John Paul II on December 5, 1982.
The façade is clearly divided into three bodies: the two lateral ones are very advanced and lower than the central one, marked vertically by reinforced concrete pilasters and the alternation of two different shades of gray. A large concrete canopy covers the entrance portal.
Inside, the two side chapels on either side of the entrance stand out, one dedicated to the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the other to reconciliation or confession. A Crucifix dominates the high altar and a Via Crucis decorates the side walls.
