Established as a vicecuria on November 1, 1976 and declared dependent on the parish of S. Ferdinando Re, it was erected as a parish on December 1, 1978 with the decree of Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti, Following the footsteps, and entrusted to the diocesan clergy of Rome. Since 1978, the community of Canossian Sisters has operated in the Parish.
Before the current parish building, the parish was located in a building on Via Ignazio Scimonelli, until 1993 with the construction of the new Church.
The new parish church was dedicated by Cardinal Vicar Camillo Ruini on June 12, 1993. In 2001, further improvements to the structures also took place with the construction of the new rectory.
On November 5, 1995, our community welcomed the Holy Father Pope John Paul II, who came on a pastoral visit to our parish. It was the first Eucharistic Celebration officiated by a Pope that was animated by altar girls.
On June 8, 2003, there were celebrations for the 25th anniversary of the erection of the parish and the 10th anniversary of the construction of the new parish, with the presence of Cardinal Vicar Camillo Ruini.
On December 24, 2007, around 12:00, a tragic fire broke out on the roof of the church, completely destroying the interior of the liturgical hall, sacred furnishings (altar, apse, pews) and some catechism classrooms. The fire was extinguished only after 1:00 am. The reconstruction machine was immediately put into action. The Fire Department set up a tent in the small field in front of the parish, which will be the church until the reconstruction work is completed. Once the reconstruction work was completed, on December 14, 2008, almost exactly one year after the fire, the Consecration Ceremony of the Altar was celebrated by Cardinal Vicar Agostino Vallini.
On December 7, 2024, during the ordinary public consistory for the creation of new cardinals, the Holy Father Pope Francis elevated the church to the seat of the cardinal title of Santi Mario e Compagni Martiri.
The territory, derived from that of the parishes of S. Ferdinando Re, S. Raimondo Nonnato and S. Gaudenzio, with a decree of Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti on July 1, 1990, was determined within the following boundaries:
G.R.A. starting from via Tuscolana up to via Bernardino Alimena, said street, up to the height of via Maso Finiguerravia Maso Finiguerravia TuscolanaG.R.A.
