It was built between 1996 and 1997 by architect Bozzini from Milan, who won a European competition announced by the Vicariate of Rome. The church was solemnly inaugurated by Cardinal Vicar Camillo Ruini on 8 November 1997, and is dedicated to the Holy Brothers of Thessalonica who evangelised the Slavic-speaking countries of Europe. On 15 February 1998, it was visited by Pope John Paul II.
The church is a parish seat, erected on 1 October 1989 by decree of Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti and entrusted to the diocesan clergy of Rome.
Since 30 September 2023 it has been the seat of the cardinal title of the same name.
The church is the work of architect Bruno Bozzini. The church, defined by a solid and compact volume, faces a large churchyard, which also gives access to other parish buildings. The façade is in travertine: a heavily splayed portal has bas-relief decorations on the splay and is surmounted by a large arched window. The church is laid out on a Greek cross plan, the apse is illuminated by a round-headed window and has a niche containing the tabernacle. The baptismal font is surmounted by an octagonal inverted pyramid roof, which allows zenithal light to rain down on the font.
