It was built between 1924 and 1925 based on a design by the architect Gustavo Giovannoni and built by the Consorzio Città Giardino Aniene, which was succeeded by the Istituto Autonomo delle Case Popolari; Pope Pius XI contributed with an offering of one million lire to its construction. The church is a parish seat, established on 2 October 1925 by Pius XI with the apostolic constitution Ad culmen apostolicae, and entrusted to the congregation of the Clerics Regular Minor (called Caracciolini).
Since 1965 it has been the seat of the cardinal title of the Holy Guardian Angels in Città Giardino. The church was visited by Pope John Paul II on 6 April 1986. It was dedicated to the guardian angels to remember the church of the Holy Guardian Angels at Tritone which was to be demolished towards the end of the twenties.
The building presents itself externally in classical monumental forms with a dome. The façade is divided into two orders, separated from each other by the inion Angelis custodibus (To the guardian angels). Under the tympanum there is a rose window, while in the lower order there is the portal enriched by columns, canopy and architrave.
The interior of the building is richly decorated. The frescoes of the dome, made by Aronne Del Vecchio in 1962, stand out in particular, with the representation of adoring Angels, the Archangel Michael and the Archangel Raphael, the Holy Trinity and the Paradise of the Angels. Michele De Angelis created the chapels dedicated to the Madonna della misericordia and the Holy Crucifix.
The high altar is decorated with images of angels and two inions, which reveal their presence in the life of men: Primi gressus hominis (The first steps of man) and In transitu hominis (At the moment of man's death).
