It was built to the design of architect Giuseppe Gualandi in 1921, and consecrated in 1926, as the church of the adjoining convent of the Sisters Help of Christians, and initially dedicated to St Mary Help of Christians in Purgatory. The nuns then sold their entire complex to the diocese of Rome, and on 15 November 1974, the church was erected as a parish church with the decree of Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti Neminem latet, and named after Thomas More, the humanist author of the famous book Utopia, an English politician and martyr who refused to swear allegiance to King Henry VIII as head of the new Anglican Church.
